Today’s announcement that Kering, the luxury group behind Gucci, Saint Laurent, and Balenciaga, among others, will only hire models over 18 to represent adults on its runway shows and photo shoots could change all of that. As one of the most powerful forces in the industry, Kering has the ability to enact change at a scale few can match, something its chairman and CEO, François-Henri Pinault, acknowledges. “As a global luxury group, we are conscious of the influence exerted on younger generations in particular by the images produced by our Houses,” he said in a statement. “We believe that we have a responsibility to put forward the best possible practices in the luxury sector and we hope to create a movement that will encourage others to follow suit.”

Model Crush Monday - French Teen Supermodel Thylane Blondeau

At fifteen years of age teen supermodel Thylane Blondeau has already had an eleven-year career, and has had more career highlights than most models ever achieve. Born on the Ivory Coast to French parents, Patrick Blondeau, a Premier League soccer star, and Veronika Loubry, a TV presenter and actress, Thylane made her modeling debut walking the runway for Jean-Paul Gaulthier at only four years old.  She has since appeared in every major kids’ fashion magazine, front countless kids and teens fashion campaigns, and has begun an acting career that includes her latest film Belle et Sebastian 2.

Thylane has already appeared in campaigns for Lacoste, Ralph Lauren and Chanel, and in the pages of Teen Vogue, Vogue Paris and on the cover of Jalouse Magazine.
A longtime star on social media, she has over 622K followers on Instagram alone.  Pinterest has countless pages dedicated to her photos, and youtube clips.
In 2016 Thylane became an ambassador for L’Oreal and walks and red carpets at film festivals and premiers the world over.
Needless to say, this is just the beginning of this new iconic French superstar-in-the-making!

Model Crush Monday - Kaia Gerber!

In the ultimate throw-back ever, legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford’s fifteen year old daughter Kaia Gerber, gives all Cindy fans a "round two" as she skyrockets into the modeling world, landing squarely at IMG and into the pages of Vogue.  The resemblance is uncanny and it seems the only thing missing is Cindy’s famous mole.  Kaia’s breakout into the modeling comes at the perfect moment as fashion is currently revisiting the early 90’s, when her mom was THE model of the moment.

Appearing in a Versace ad campaign at age ten set the wheels in motion putting Kaia squarely on the industry’s radar.  Since then she has appeared on the cover and in an editorial feature of Vogue Paris with her mom photographed by Mario Testino, in the new fashion film for Miu Miu Eyewear, as a part of Alexander Wang’s girl squad, in the recent campaign for Chrome Hearts, not to mention a feature in Teen Vogue, and the covers of Pop, and Love magazines.  She has just been awarded “The Breakthrough Model of the Year” by The Daily Front Row and will be honored during Fashion Week this September.

The similarities to her mom are obvious on the outside but perhaps even more on the inside.  Ciindy is known as being the consummate professional, with a strong work ethic: always on time, always courteous, always kind, and always delivers, and she has instilled the same ideals in her daughter.  Kaia is confident and comfortable in front of the camera without any teenage awkwardness, qualities which her mom has said she did not have when she first started modeling as a teenager.

Up next is an appearance in Lifetime TV’s Sister Cities, where she makes her acting debut.  I have the feeling we will be watching Kaia for years to come, as she carries on the world’s love for all things Cindy, and becomes a supermodel in her own right.  She isn’t just Cindy 2.0!  She KAIA, thank you very much!

From Teen Models to Movie Stars

ASHTON KUTCHNER

Kids and teens can learn a lot through modeling from being professional on set. Everything from understanding their part in the creative process,  to overcoming shyness, taking  on-camera direction for TV commercials, and how to present themselves on castings.  That explains why many successful child and teen models transition into careers on TV and in film.

Many Hollywood stars cut their teeth in modeling before their big breaks.  Ashton Kutchner, Jennifer Lawrence, Taylor Swift, January Jones, Emma Roberts, and Channing Tatum all modeled as teens for Abercrombie and Fitch.  Peyton List was a top child and young teen model in NYC before she became a Disney star and red carpet darling.  Bella Thorne modeling from a very early age in her home state of Florida, even appearing in an ad for Guess Kids.

JENNIFER LAWRENCE

EMMA ROBERTS

CHANNING TATUM

TAYLOR SWIFT

JANUARY JONES

The industry has the potential to open many doors in some of the major US markets such as NYC, LA, and Miami, through TV and film, fashion, music, and dance.  Kids and teens in these markets are able to meet agents, casting directors, producers, and scouts.  They are able to take acting classes and get on-camera training.  They are able to appear in acting and dance showcases, and to try out for pilot season in LA, or audition for kids TV programs with Nickelodeon and Disney in Florida.  A good track record as a successful child or teen model can open doors to those looking at modeling as a stepping stone to acting, dancing, or singing.

Everyone has to start somewhere!  Learning how to present your best and brightest self – for any career path – can be an invaluable experience for young models.

Your Best Swim Suit Shoot Starts Here! Better Pictures on the Beach.

Shooting on the beach in a swimsuit can be one of the most challenging shoots a new model can do, but having a few tricks ready and practiced, can make the experience a lot less stressful and much more successful.

The whole point of doing a swimwear shoot is to show your proportions and how natural you can be without relying on a lot of styling or contrived hair and makeup.   It’s all you!  Make sure you are in great shape before you shoot swimwear so that you can actually use the images in your book – no one is going to retouch you into having an amazing body if you clearly need to go to the gym!

With that in mind, choose a bikini or one-piece that fits properly and does not dig in on the sides making rolls or indentations.  If you aren’t super voluptuous, don’t try to pad yourself up – it never looks good and clients will see it as a drawback. Enhance what you have and own it.  Same goes if you are curvy!  Wearing a suit that fits actually makes your body look better.  Watch where the bottom of the suit hits at the top of your leg to make sure it doesn’t dig in or shorten the visual look of your legs.

If you are a newbie, start by wearing a pair of shorts over your suit like above, until you are comfortable enough to shoot without them.  Or try a sheer cover-up that let’s the light through and catches the breeze and flutters around you – it can be super flattering.

Striking a static pose right away can feel forced and awkward so try movement, such as walking towards or away from the photographer, or twirling around.  This looks much more natural and can get you warmed up. When standing still you must be really aware of your posture and pose.  Model from the top of your head to the tip of your toes as the camera sees all of it, and it all matters.  This takes practice in front of a mirror at home to know your body’s best angles.  Cheating a little to one side is more faltering than shooting straight on, unless you are really fit and can slam-dunk a power pose, staring down the camera.

KEY TIPS TO REMEMBER:

  • Keep your shoulders down and back so you have a long neck and beautiful collarbones.
  • Arching your back a bit so that you feel it in your lower back makes the legs longer and thinner.
  • Arms should be relaxed and natural.
  • Crossing one knee slightly over the other and touching your ankles together while standing on your toes really lengthens visual look of the legs.

Opening your eyes on a bright beach can be really difficult but there are tricks you can learn that will help you to avoid a scowl

Close your eyes, relax your face, and breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth – open your eyes on the exhale and close them after your hear the camera click.  This makes the most gorgeous natural beauty look if you do it correctly.  Practice!

  • Let the photographer count you in, opening your eyes on their cue. "1, 2, 3, OPEN"
  • Shoot in an open shade area if possible, or see if there is someone on set who can hold a “scrim” to provide shade over you while you shoot.
  • Smile!  A big, sincere, gorgeous smile makes a natural squint – and looks great!

You and your photographer are a team and it is in both of your best interests to make beautiful and marketable images.  Choose your photographer carefully, and make sure their esthetic matches yours, when you are choosing for a test shoot. Plan ahead and be on the same page.

Practice at home and learn as you go on the shoot and enjoy it!  If you are tense it won’t work. Have fun with sass and class  ... because it’s not all about your ass, despite what the Kardashian's might have you think!

Best tip from this entire post you must always remember .... SHOULDERS DOWN and be YOU!

Big thank you to Allana Wesley White for the amazing photos - definitely the photographer in the know in Miami!
